History of Block Panchayat

Blocks were formed as part of the National Extension Service Scheme that was introduced across the country in 1952. As part of this, Puzhakkal Block was formed as a pre-extension block in the financial year 1961-62. The block, which started with a one-year term and a fund of Rs. 1 lakh, was later upgraded to a NES block.
The block office started functioning in the building of Sri Kunnathat (Thachappillai) Madhava Menon as its headquarters in Puzhakkal. Later, the office was shifted to a rented building in Muthuvara and then to Puranattukara. Later, due to the efforts of the locals, 1.46 acres of land was purchased from Sri Alappatt Joseph Master in Puranattukara for a nominal price and the headquarters building was constructed. It was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Kerala, Sri E.M.S. Namboothiripad in 1968 and the operations were shifted to the present building complex.
Initially, the block included the panchayats of Atattu, Avanoor, Arimpur, Ayyanthol, Kaiparamba and Tholoor. Later, Avanoor Grama Panchayat was divided and became Killanur Panchayat and later Mulankunnathukavu Panchayat and they continued to be part of the Puzhakkal Block Panchayat. Later, according to the reorganization that took place at various times, Arimpur Panchayat was transferred to Anthikad Block and Kolazhi Grama Panchayat was added to this block from Ollukara Block. At present, 6 panchayats of Atattu, Avanoor, Kaiparamba, Kolazhi, Mulankunnathukavu and Tholoor are included in the Puzhakkal Block.
Sree Ramakrishna Ashram and Sree Sarada Math, which have made many contributions to the field of social renaissance in India, are located near the block. Many educational institutions are located in this block area. Several institutions like Government Medical College, IES, Vidya Engineering Colleges, Amala Medical College, Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, Chinmaya Mission Colleges and Schools, Westfort Training College etc. are functioning in the block area. "KILA" which provides training to the people's representatives and officials of the local self-government institutions is located in this block area. Tourist centers like Vilangankunnu and Poomala Dam are located in this block area. The Puzhakkal River is the main water source flowing through this area. The Atatt, Tholoor and Kaiparamba panchayats with kol lands play an important role in the paddy production of Thrissur district.
